We take a look back at Nirvana, a raised single storey house located near Rye, East Sussex.
Natural Building Technologies were asked to provide the natural, breathable insulation material for Nirvana. The aim was not only for the materials to help achieve the desired level of performance, but also to contribute to the look and feel of the building. NBT also assisted with detailing the wall and roof construction for the purposes of U-values, support and waterproofing.
The insulation was to be visible beyond the cladding as it consists of open joint horizontal timber boards. The insulation therefore had to be aesthetically pleasing and in keeping with the design, adding to the feel of the finished structure.
NBT provided high density T&G woodfibre wall insulation boards and flexible woodfibre infill insulation. 35mm ISOLAIR was used on timber studs, infilled with 150mm PAVAFLEX. 60mm NBT PAVATHERM PLUS was used on the timber rafters, infilled with 200mm PAVAFLEX and 140mm PAVATHERM FORTE was provided for the flat roof. These materials were specifically chosen as they provide a substantial mass to the construction, benefitting the internal thermal and acoustic qualities of the building.
