Pavadentro - Internal Insulation

Pavadentro Board

Pavadentro for the internal insulation of exterior walls is an innovative, ecological insulation with excellent capillary and hygroscopic properties which prevent condensation formation and degrading of the building fabric. In addition the specially designed integrated mineral functional layer provides effective moisture control: It balances humidity levels by buffering water vapour and releasing moisture back into the room to maintain a steady equilibrium.

The Pavadentro wood fibre insulation board, especially designed for internal insulation of the exterior walls on old and historic buildings, was awarded with the innovation award by the Swiss federal department for the environment. The board reduces the formation of condensation in the existing construction to a minimum and creates a comfortable living environment.

The Pavadentro board can be directly plastered onto using Baumit mineral plasters, and can be fixed mechanically directly to the existing wall using suitable screws and washer plates.

Advantages of Pavadentro
CE logoFSC logoNaturePlus logo
  • natural product made from waste soft wood
  • breathable, vapour-permeable construction
  • creates healthy comfortable living environment
  • uses building physics to protect and support the building fabric
  • outstanding hygroscopic properties
  • moisture dispersion through capillary action
  • external facade remains visible and unchanged
  • easy-to-handle board size (1 person) for modernisation and refurbishment projects
Construction issues

By insulating an existing exterior wall with standard insulation on the inside the dew point is on the cold side of the insulation, in the existing wall structure. Moisture damage and degradation are common symptoms. Note the water content through the wall structure in the diagram below, showing the interstitial condensation is occurring in the existing wall.

Moisture problems of standard insulation

By insulating an existing exterior wall with Pavadentro wood fibre insulation, interstitial condensation occurs only within the insulation layer, as intended. Through the boards excellent hygroscopic and capillary active properties, the moisture is released back into the room as water vapour and no elements are damaged.

Construction Examples
Pavadentro on Timber Stud Buildup

U-Value before of 2.66W/m2/k and Decrement delay of 3.9 hours.

U-Value after improvement with Pavadentro boards of 0.47W/m2/k and decrement delay of 7.9 hours.

This is a significant upgrading of thermal performance - both in keeping the building cooler in summer, and insulating from cold in the winter.

After upgrading with Pavadentro, this building would require 80% less energy to heat.

Application: Key Considerations
Suitable Wall Types
The existing wall is vapour open (does not contain any resin paint etc.) Pavadentro is suitable for:
  • Masonry (brick/block)
  • Timber frame (all types)
  • Solid timber
  • Natural stone masonry (depending on thickness of insulation and wall)
Location and Thickness
  • When using Pavadentro boards of different thicknesses, the difference should not be more than 20 mm
  • Subject to interstitial condensation analysis and U-Value calculation (both provided by NBT).
  • Please download the technical manual and contact your local NBT representative, who can advise further.

Installation criteria
  • Insulation for dry areas (not suitable in rooms with constantly high humidity)
  • External wall must be sufficiently protected against driving rain
  • No rising damp within the structural element
  • Only above DPC level
Services
  • Do not integrate electrical services in the Pavadentro insulation layer.
  • Install services within the plaster layer, or in the floor or plinth area
  • Alternatively, seek to install services on internal walls only.
