Natural Building Technologies’ (NBT) high performance wood fibre insulation products have been used in the construction of an up-market retail development in Rothwell, Northamptonshire. The building was designed and built by Tykes Development Ltd, with sustainability of materials as one of its most important criteria. NBT’s Diffutherm was used for the insulation of the external walls, which were finished with an NBT mineral render. Pavatherm Plus was used to insulate the partition walls and the roof, whilst Pavatherm Profil was utilised for insulation of the floor.
The two-storey property comprises bistro and wine bar, The Olive Lounge, a women’s fashion boutique, and a hairstylists. Constructed almost entirely from timber and timber-based products, the building has a stunning, natural appearance. Its simple structure consists of an oak frame with timber infill studs. A centuries-old, pre-existing stone wall was also preserved as part of the structure, and is partially exposed throughout.
The decision to use NBT products was based on their excellent acoustic and thermal insulation performance, as well as their natural and sustainable credentials. The wood fibre insulation forms a thermal shell, which reduces thermal bridging and increases flanked sound protection. In addition, NBT’s wood fibre insulation products create a fully breathable construction, thereby maintaining a healthy environment, with reduced risk of mould formation and the associated health risks to occupants.
NBT solutions also offer significant environmental benefits. The wood fibre boards are wholly recyclable due to their 95% plus waste wood composition and lock up more carbon than is used throughout their manufacture and delivery to site.
Developer of the properties, and owner of Tykes Development Ltd, Kevin Jones comments: “As developers, we should all be looking at ways to reduce our effect on the environment, and this was an opportunity for me to do that.”
The development also features Navitron solar panels on the roof, which meet the building’s water heating requirements, as well as a rainwater harvester, which supplies water for its sanitary system.
