NBT insulation for largest Passivhaus Development in UK

PerryfieldsNBT’s woodfibre insulation systems have been specified by for the largest Passivhaus development in the UK. The Perryfields development in Dorset comprises 66 one, two and three bedroom Passivhaus homes, all with a timber frame construction. The ultra energy efficient homes will provide a mixture of private and social housing at an impressive build cost of just £1,000/m2. Construction is already under way, and is expected to be complete in Spring 2012. The development is being built by developers, Lomand Homes, and specified by b3 architecture ltd.

The flats and terraced houses will be predominantly insulated using NBT’s Pavaclad and Diffutherm systems, delivering ultra high levels of thermal performance and airtightness, and preventing summertime overheating. These systems feature NBT Diffutherm and Pavatherm Plus natural woodfibre insulation boards with Pavaflex woodfibre batt insulation between the timber studs. The NBT Diffutherm system will be used for the majority of the wall sections. This is a rendered wall insulation system, finished with NBT lime render.

To meet planning requirements, some areas of the external wall will be finished with Portland stone cladding and insulated using the Pavaclad system, featuring Pavatherm Plus woodfibre insulation. Pavatherm Plus has also been specified for the roof of the homes, with NBT Pavaflex being installed between the rafters to maximise loft insulation. Siga airtightness tapes and membranes will seal joints at windows and doorframes throughout the construction, as well as gaps caused by penetrations, such as pipework, ducting and wiring.

The decision to use NBT products was based on their capacity to provide the ultra high levels of insulation and airtightness that are required to meet Passivhaus standards. The woodfibre boards achieve this by creating a highly insulated building envelope with minimal thermal bridging, a critical requirement in achieving zero carbon housing. As a result, the Perryfields properties will achieve wall and roof U-values of 0.15W/m2K and a Y-value of 0.02W/m2K, as well as an airtightness level of less than 0.6m3/hr/m2@50Pa.

NBT’s woodfibre insulation systems are fully breathable, thereby maintaining a healthy living environment, with reduced risk of mould formation and the associated health risks to occupants, as well as providing extra protection to the building fabric.

The products also offer significant environmental benefits. The woodfibre boards are wholly recyclable due to their over 95% waste wood composition and lock up approximately one tonne of carbon dioxide for every tonne of product used.
