Building Schools for the Future

NBT's ecologically sound Pavatherm, Pavatherm Plus and Diffutherm woodfibre board insulation systems have been used to provide high performance, healthy and sustainable insulation for Willmott Dixon's innovative Re-Thinking school demonstration building, which was launched at the BRE OFFSITE2007 event in June.

Constructed in the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, the Re-Thinking building is a representative segment of the school of the future and demonstrates all the principles that would be incorporated into a full-size school building. Every aspect of the Re-Thinking school has been designed to improve the learning environment, from the flexible and practical internal layout, to the high level of natural light and ventilation, and the enhanced sustainability and energy efficiency credentials of the building.

NBT's Pavatherm, Pavatherm Plus and Diffutherm woodfibre board systems are completely ecologically sound, natural products, which outperform synthetic alternatives when it comes to durability and thermal performance, and they were specified for the Re-Thinking school building to create a well insulated, healthy interior environment.

The Re-Thinking school building was constructed using an Eurban timber solid wall building structure. The Pavatherm, Pavatherm Plus and Diffutherm systems were installed to the external face of the walls and roof, which served to minimise thermal bridging and deliver very high levels of airtightness, resulting in a fully breathable, thermally efficient building envelope.

Charles Tincknell, head of Re-Thinking, commented: The aim of the Re-Thinking school is to showcase educational transformation and environmental sustainability, and act as a research tool to facilitate on-going development in the design and construction of educational buildings. The building has been designed to be highly sustainable and uses the most advanced, high performance products at every level to create a healthy, comfortable and inspiring learning environment for both pupils and staff.

NBT's woodfibre systems are able to support a broad range of different finishes and cladding systems and the Re-Thinking school building was clad using various types of cedar board.

95% of the material used in the manufacture of NBT's Pavatherm, Pavatherm Plus and Diffutherm systems is waste, which makes them extremely sustainable products. Following an assessment of their environmental profile by BRE Certification Ltd, NBT's woodfibre board systems achieved an A rating in the BRE's Green Guide, which uses a simple A, B, Crating system to provide specifiers with a clear indication of the environmental performance of different building products and systems.

NBT is the UK's leading supplier of ecological building systems. The company provides high performance building solutions for the private housebuilding and commercial sectors, as well as the public sector. NBT's product range includes environmentally sound structural building systems for walls, roofs and floors, as well as ranges of ecological paints, mineral plasters and renders, and natural fibre insulation.
