Code for Sustainable Homes Solutions

Code for Sustainable Homes solutions

Looking for a solution to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH)?

NBT (Natural Building Technologies) Ltd will be launching a range of innovative building solutions at Ecobuild that will enable housebuilders and developers to meet levels 3 and 4 (and beyond) of the in a straightforward, environmentally sound and cost effective way.

The new building solutions in the range are based on NBT's high performance solid wall building system, ThermoPlan, and its highly insulating Pavaclad and Diffutherm woodfibre board systems. In addition to ensuring a project meets at least level 3 or level 4 of the CSH, each system in the new range has been developed by NBT using environmentally sound materials and offers superior standards in terms of sustainability, buildability and performance, compared to conventional building methods.

Neil May, Managing Director of NBT, explained:'The Code for Sustainable Homes has been developed with the aim of delivering significant improvements to the environmental performance of new build homes over the next ten years. It has the potential to drive forward a step change in building practices by setting new standards for the key elements of housing design and construction that affect the sustainability credentials of new homes.

However, there are still some aspects of the Code, particularly with regard to energy and carbon standards, which are confused and confusing, because they have been based on percentage reductions from Building Regulations standards (Part L 2006). As a result, there is a real danger that some of the solutions that meet the higher levels of the Code will, both in calculation and reality, not perform as well in terms of carbon reduction than solutions designed to meet the lower levels of the Code, while still costing large amounts to construct.

NBT has undertaken considerable assessment of ways to achieve levels 3 and 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and is now able to offer solutions that meet the requirements at both levels and also deliver real carbon reductions in a cost effective way. These will help housebuilders efficiently meet level 3 of the CSH, which was introduced in 2007 and will soon become mandatory for all social housing and English Partnership projects, and level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, which becomes mandatory in 2010.
